The Last Voyage of the USS Constitution is widely regarded as one of the most eccentric and memorable side quests in Fallout 4. Located near Charlestown, this quest involves helping a crew of enthusiastic robot sailors led by Captain Ironsides launch an ancient naval vessel into the sky. Navigating the mission requires deciding whether to aid the metallic crew or side with local scavengers seeking to dismantle the ship for scrap.
Starting the Mission and Meeting Captain Ironsides
To initiate the quest, travel east of Bunker Hill until you spot the massive wooden ship wedged into a ruined building. A Lookout robot will approach you and request that you report to Captain Ironsides on the main deck. Boarding the vessel reveals a crew of Sentry Bots and Handy units dedicated to restoring the ship for its grand launch.
Assisting the Robot Crew with Ship Repairs
Your initial tasks involve completing maintenance work around the ship to prepare it for flight. You must repair or replace damaged power cables and install a replacement power relay coil. Players with high Intelligence or Repair capabilities can fix these components directly without searching for extra parts.
After addressing the internal systems, Captain Ironsides will ask you to retrieve crucial hardware from local scavengers. You will need to obtain a guidance chip and Poseidon radar transmitter, either through peaceful negotiation, stealth, or combat. Finally, you must locate turbopump bearings at a nearby industrial site to make the engines fully operational.
Choosing Between Robots and Scavengers
During the quest, a scavenger named Mandy Stiles offers a lucrative alternative to siding with the robots. You can choose to sabotage the turbopump bearings and help the scavengers destroy the crew for profit. However, remaining loyal to Captain Ironsides yields greater combat rewards and unique story outcomes.
If you back the crew, you must defend the USS Constitution against waves of attacking scavengers. Fighting from the deck or using the ship's built-in cannons will help clear out hostile forces quickly. Completing the defense earns you the Broadsider, a unique handheld naval cannon.
Launching the USS Constitution and Claiming Rewards
Once all repairs and defenses are complete, head to the nearby Royal Arms building to activate the auxiliary power switch. Throwing the breaker triggers a spectacular rocket launch that sends the massive vessel soaring across the Boston skyline. The ship eventually crashes into another skyscraper, completing the mission in hilarious fashion.
After the launch, you can visit the ship at its new location atop the tower across the bay. Speaking with Captain Ironsides rewards you with the Lieutenant's Hat and permanent access to his captain's quarters.
